Within: Spatial Porosities
Alexis’ FADX Submission looks to reinvigorate Garema Place. The project framework is guided simply by the definition of ‘Garema’, a Ngunnawal word meaning to camp, come together and share food + drink. The contemporary ‘draping’ mesh + tile façade is the feature of this design, boldly departing from conventional Civic architecture. More than a project, it's a catalyst for conversation, a communal nexus—a place for the people of Canberra to converge.

Ground Floor Experience - Arcade and Stairs
The design looks to create spatial fluidity throughout the site. The open-air arcade (left) contributes to this, expanding pedestrian access throughout the site. The mesh drape provides an intimate stair entrance (right) that leads to the expansive public roof terrace.

Axis-Based Design
Technical aspects of this design were defined from a single axis point. This rhythmic design is not only intriguing, but is a subtle reference to the Burley Griffin Axial Plan of Canberra.
