Claire Paton

Creative Writing, 2021

My name is Claire Paton and I’m a singer/song-writer, graduating from a Creative Writing degree at the University of Canberra this year. I am a country girl and most of my songs were born around a campfire, in a field or on a hill, watching the world go by with my kelpies. Music contributes so much joy, energy and colour into my experience of life and my influences include Pink Floyd, Jimi Hendrix, The Eagles, Led Zeppelin, The Doors and Van Morrison. Songs can take me to a place that grows my perception of the cosmos and my tiny place in it, opens my heart and allows me to live more fully. I can only hope that my own music might do the same. It is my passion and I am so fortunate to be able to live it out.

I'm looking for a job.

I wrote this song on a back porch in Kentucky. It is about the journey from innocence to experience, and the butterfly was literal at the time. She became a reflection of the growth that I was experiencing.

'Had to change', an original song by Claire Paton

This song travelled from my heart to paper after my first heartbreak. It was my decision, yet the distress and anguish took me by ugly surprise, and it took several months of backpacking the world to fully heal.
