Interaction Design, 2023

Greetings.

My name is Kael, and I am soon graduating from University of Canberra with a bachelor’s degree in Interaction Design.

Before university, I worked within the Community Care & Aged Care sectors for a number of years, which granted me first-hand experience of the problems and limitations users in this cohort are exposed to. As an altruist at heart, I was also passively honing my capacity for empathy for designing solutions targeting user inclusivity and diversity.

I’m currently employed as a strategic designer within an APS departmental Design Lab. In this role, I’m able to apply both my degree knowledge and my previous work experience to creative problem-solving and human centred design solutions.

Health Organiser App - UI Design for Inclusivity & Diverse Users

Health Organiser App - UI Design for Inclusivity & Diverse Users

The brief for this product was to design a user interface for a medical based mobile application assisting users who are positioned outside the “bathtub curve”. I chose to target users with mild cognitive impairments, who may experience bouts of confusion or short term memory forgetfulness. To combat this issue, users are asked to select a specific purpose upon opening the application. This task is then displayed at the top of the screen whilst navigating the app to serve as an immediate reminder at a glance. Concepts explored: Turn-by-turn live Hospital/Practice Navigation, Prescription/medication management, appointment/calendar integration

Iris van Herpen Inspired VR Controllers

Iris van Herpen Inspired VR Controllers

As inspiration for this project, I was to select a modern designer, immerse myself in their work, and design a set of Virtual Reality handset controllers that encapsulates their aesthetic and essence. I chose Dutch fashion designer Iris van Herpen as her uniquely creative approach to fusing technology and fashion drew me in. I deeply admire her use of unconventional materials in experimental and artistic ways, and attempted to replicate that echelon of creativity. Materials used: blue foam, magnets, moulded adhesive, velvet, chiffon, satin, clay, feathers

Arachne Hanger

Arachne Hanger

Arachne - an artisan weaver granted a second chance at life by Athena. For this project, I was tasked with selecting from a list of common household archetypes, identifying reasons they were commonly discarded, and redesign that item to circumvent those issues. I chose to redesign the coat hanger and attempted to tackle three areas for end of life use: breakages, suitable usability & emotional connection. This redesigned hanger removes the need for hanging clips, provided higherhanging for longer garments, and is constructed out of 100% recycled and upcycled materials. As opposed to their plastic or wire counterparts, Wooden hangers are commonly seen to hold more weight, in terms of durability, value and aesthetic. Materials used: recycled timber, upcycled hanger hook, water-based timber varnish

Fount Smart Kettle

Fount Smart Kettle

No stranger to household white goods and electronics, Samsung pride themselves on innovation, human experiences and impacting people in their everyday lives. This conceptual design merges these core values with the high-end aesthetic of existing Samsung products. After conducting target user research, examining a product matrix, and identifying a suitable market gap for current day electric kettles, I chose to use Samsung as the brand for this project. As an established brand with an already existing Internet-of-Things ecosystem, I also decided to explore how a Samsung branded smart kettle would integrate into the SmartThings application, and potential UI design. Concepts explored: Fount SmartThings UI, wireless connectivity, OLED touch display, LED indicator strips for user signalling of water level, temperature, and operation of use
