Master of Architecture, 2021
My name is Luis-Angelo and I am completing my Master of Architecture degree this year at UC. After completing my Bachelor degree, I took on the challenge of growing further by taking a Master’s degree to adapt and improve my technical and creative architectural skills. Growing up my first 13 years in the Philippines then arriving in Australia to become a citizen while still occasionally visiting back home, I have been able to determine and observe how architecture shapes the culture and the society of a city on a large and small scale, especially comparing Manila to Canberra. Hence, I desire and aim to be part of the growth of Canberra as a city and as a society with my dedication and interest in design and architecture.
For Graduation Studio, I collaborated with Braulio and Bruno in designing a hybrid complex between Haig Park and Northbourne Avenue. Our tutors challenged us to dive deep into what hybridity truly meant in architecture, and how we can apply that knowledge to our design. And so, my group designed the UHC (The Undulating Hybrid Centre) that conceptualises this idea of hybridity by highlighting its complexity through multi-layered and multi-functional uses of urban space and functions of the city. Our hybrid complex serves as a multi-functional architectural entity, in response to the social, economic and developmental city drivers, which is predominantly composed of a north residential tower, a south residential tower, performance sphere, elevated roof garden, lower elevated office structure, central shopping centre and the main social condenser, the undulating surface which covers most of the recreational spaces at the street level and also acts as a function space accessible through various points.
