Interior Architecture, 2022

As a designer, I strive to combine innovation and imagination to create functional, beautiful, and individual designs. I have found a passion for learning the minor details that make up a major design concept. I continue to learn and build my professional and personal style through working with COX Architecture since 2021. This has given me the confidence to push the boundaries further, consequently producing amazing design outcomes.

Over the last 3 years of studying Interior Architecture, I have found my place not just within the university but also within the industry. I always put my best foot forward and continue to not just look, but create opportunities for myself and wish to continue my career learning and achieving high standards of design.

The National Zoo & Aquarium has asked us to explore opportunities of a function centre, accommodation and a third mode of our choosing, mine being a glasshouse

The concepts that I have explored for my function centre are openness This function centre is built upon concepts of openness and viewing and being viewed in the context of animals. The bar acts as a centrepiece of the building, creating a natural pull towards the middle for circulation. The roof element is designed to reflect over architectural features of the zoo. The function centre was designed to allow animals to view us, switching roles with them, to encourage awareness of animals and their natural habitats.

Accommodation - Family Room

Accommodation - Family Room

Places of gathering and pulled linkages between spaces form the concepts of this accommodation. Wanting to create a natural place at the centre of the buildings for gathering, naturally created these 4 forms. The enclosed space allows guests to be separated from external happenings and inhabit a space similar to a neighbourhood. The bathroom lookouts were designed for the location of the bungalows on the site. Where they sit, the views of either the animals or the natural environment can be seen and can determine which bungalow is booked.

Glasshouse

Glasshouse

This space’s key concept was about evoking emotion and being a space that could be multifunctional. This form is designed to behold its occupants and exhibit its beauty within the natural environment. The ceiling battens are lined with plants, invoking biophilic design, helping to keep the structure cool in hot summers and evoking positive emotions from those within. The glasshouse roof structure is one side glass facing the eastern sun and the other side solid facing the western sun. This was designed to counter the hot western afternoon sun during the summer months. The solid side of the roof helps to reduce the impact of the afternoon sun for the occupant’s comfort in the space.
